Since 1947, the Balz–Schiemann reaction has remained the most popular method for the synthesis of meta-fluoropyridines. The method involves dangerous pyridyl diazonium salts and has led to numerous documented explosions. A safe alternative to meta-fluoropyridines has now been developed on the basis of a 1,3-disconnection strategy.
