Ethylene equivalent reagent
Vinyltrimethylsilane is a versatile reagent used in organic synthesis as an ethylene equivalent in electrophilic substitution reactions1. Its applications include the synthesis of aryl vinyl sulfides, aldehydes homologation, and the formation of 3-trimethylsilyl-3-buten-2-one, which is useful for Robinson annulations. The reagent participates in [3+2] cycloadditions, forming isoxazolidine adducts, and is key in the synthesis of α,β-unsaturated aldehydes1. Vinyltrimethylsilane is highly flammable and hygroscopic. It should be handled with care under well-ventilated conditions. The reagent is typically stored in a cool, dry place away from moisture due to its reactivity with protic solvents.
