Reagent for formylation
N-(chloromethylidene)-N-methylmethanaminium chloride (Vilsmeier reagent) is a common way for the formylation of arenes, heterocycles, and alkenes via the Vilsmeier–Haack reaction1. It is a white hygroscopic shelf-stable powder. The formylation process is general for all activated aromatic systems (e.g. pyrene, anthracene, azulene, ferrocene, and N, N-dimethylaniline) and electron-rich heterocyclic systems (e.g. thiophenes, indoles, furans, and pyrroles). However, simple aromatic hydrocarbons such as benzene and toluene do not react with Vilsmeier reagent.
Synonyms: dimethylchloromethyleneammonium chloride; (chloromethylidene)dimethylazanium chloride; Arnold's reagent; N-(chloromethylidene)-N-methylmethanaminium chloride
