Dimethyl malononitrile (DMMN) can serve as an electrophilic, carbon-bound nitrile source reagent for effective cyanation of both aryl Grignard and aryllithium reagents¹. It is a shelf-stable powder, with a low melting point of 31-33℃. The reagent can undergo reactions with nitrones and other geminal dinitriles in stereoselective 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition to yield oxadiazolines. Dimethyl malononitrile affords excellent yields in the Ru(II)-catalyzed [2+2+2] cycloaddition with diynes to form the corresponding pyridines.
