Reagent for the synthesis of vinyl sulfones

Diethyl methylsulfonylmethylphosphonate (DMSMP) is a reagent for the preparation of vinyl sulfones and sulfonated compounds via the Horner-Emmons reaction1. It reacts with aldehydes and ketones under mild conditions to produce vinyl sulfones with high stereoselectivity and yields. DMSMP is also employed in Knoevenagel condensations and the synthesis of allenyl sulfones, providing valuable intermediates for synthetic applications. It is a stable crystalline compound with good solubility in common organic solvents. Reactions using DMSMP are best conducted under anhydrous conditions and inert atmosphere.
Synonyms: diethyl methylsulfonylmethylphosphonate; DMSMP; methylsulfonylmethylphosphonic acid, diethyl ester; phosphonic acid, [(methylsulfonyl)methyl]-, diethyl ester
