1,3-Dibromo-5,5-dimethylhydantoin or DBH is a bromination reagent that commonly finds uses for the radical bromination of benzylic positions of arenes and heterocycles. It is a white powder that is soluble in alcohol, ether, and benzene and insoluble in water¹. The use of DBH is advantageous for, the preparation of particularly acid-sensitive benzylic bromides. Electrophilic brominations of alkenes often proceed in high yields. DBH has also been found to be the most effective reagent for the bromofluorination of alkenes in combination with Hydrogen Fluoride–Pyridine complex or Silicon(IV) Fluoride¹.
