Reagent for the reduction of carboxylic acids to aldehydes
3-(Phenylmethylsilyl)-2-fluoro-1-methylpyridinium triflate is a metal-free reducing reagent that converts aryl and alkyl carboxylic acids to aldehydes under mild, aqueous conditions1. It is a stable crystalline solid that exhibits excellent chemoselectivity and tolerates diverse functional groups without over-reduction or epimerization. The reagent leaves various functional groups intact, including nitro, nitrile, ester, amide, aryl iodide, sulfone, carbamate, Fmoc, and alkene groups. It can also be applied to a one-pot ester-to-aldehyde conversion, following in-situ hydrolysis of esters to acids with LiOH, and then reduction under the same conditions.
Synonyms: 2-fluoro-1-methyl-3-[methyl(phenyl)silyl]pyridin-1-ium trifluoromethanesulfonate
