Reagent for N-formylation

N-Formylsaccharin

N-formylsaccharin is the reagent primarily used for the N-formylation of amines1. The procedure is straightforward, and the reaction is rapid with primary and secondary amines in THF at ambient temperature. The scope of the reaction is broad, both aliphatic and aromatic amines can be N-formylated. The reaction is chemoselective - the amino group is more preferred than hydroxy. Other advantages of the reagent include no purification, no racemization of the formylated compounds, and the use of inexpensive and easily handled reagents.
