DDQ

2,3-Dichloro-5,6-dicyano-1,4-benzoquinone (DDQ) is a versatile and powerful oxidant used primarily for dehydrogenation, oxidation, and cyclization reactions under mild conditions1. It is particularly effective for the dehydrogenation of hydrocarbons, α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds, alcohols, and heterocycles. DDQ facilitates selective benzylic oxidation, phenolic cyclization, and cleavage of alcohol protecting groups such as allyl and prenyl ethers. DDQ is a bright yellow, moisture-sensitive solid with a melting point of ~215°C. It is stable in a dry atmosphere but decomposes in water presence, releasing toxic hydrogen cyanide.
