Reagent for N/O-formylation

TFEF

2,2,2-Trifluoroethyl formate (TFEF) is a versatile reagent that enables N- and O-formylating of alcohols, amines, and N-hydroxylamines in soft conditions1. It is a colorless shelf-stable liquid, but highly flammable. The reaction of formylating alcohols can be carried with primary, secondary, and tertiary alcohols (but with tertiary the yield is lower, but still moderate). The formylating of primary and secondary amines is faster than O-formylating and generally gives an excellent yield. In the case of amino alcohols, the reagent prefers an amino group. Also, the reagent formylates N-hydroxylamines with high yields (88–95%) making this reagent an indispensable instrument.

Synonyms: 2,2,2-trifluoroethyl formate; trifluoroethyl formate; formic acid 2,2,2-trifluoroethyl ester; 2,2,2-trifluoro-ethanol-1-formate
