Reagent for N/O-formylation
N-Formylbenzotriazole is a common, easy-to-use N/O-formylation reagent1. It is a stable white solid capable of formylation of a wide scope of substances. The reagent can formylate aliphatic and aromatic amines in good yields at room temperature, and deactivated aromatic amines, such as nitroanilines, can be formylated with heating. O‑formylation of primary and aromatic alcohols performs without heating with good yields, but secondary and tertiary require heating for the complete reaction. The byproduct of the formylation reaction can be easily washed away with a weak basic solution, which makes the purification process simple and clean.
Synonyms: 1-formylbenzotriazol; 1H-1,2,3-benzotriazole-1-carbaldehyde
